MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s top immigration official will face criminal charges in a fire that killed 40 migrants in Ciudad Juarez last month, with federal prosecutors saying he was remiss in not preventing the disaster despite earlier indications of problems at his agency’s detention centers. The decision to file charges against Francisco Garduño, the head of Mexico’s National Immigration Institute, was announced late Tuesday by the federal Attorney General’s Office. It followed repeated calls from within Mexico, and from some Central American nations, not to stop the case at the five low-level officials, guards and a Venezuelan migrant already facing homicide charges in the case. Anger initially focused on two guards who were seen fleeing the March 27 fire, without unlocking the cell door to allow the migrants to escape. But President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said earlier Tuesday that they didn’t have the keys. The Attorney General’s Office said several other officer...

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager could possibly be headed to the injured list after leaving Tuesday night’s game against Kansas City because of left hamstring tightness while running the bases. Seager was running between first and second base in the fifth inning after hitting an opposite-field double into the left-field corner. He appeared to make the turn around first base cleanly, but then pulled up after a few steps and gingerly went to second base.“Gosh, he’s been swinging the bat so well You hate to see it because he’s been on fire. I mean he’s just squaring up everything,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said after the Rangers won 8-5 in 10 innings. “We’ll re-evaluate him. You know, he’s got some tightness there and we’ll see where we’re at (Wednesday).”Seager missed nearly a month while on the injured list with a left hamstring strain in 2019. Bochy said he had spoken only briefly to Seager, who wasn’t in the clubhouse when it was opened to...

An exhausted Dansby Swanson had pushed his body to the brink. The emotional toll of the devastating knee injury his wife, Mallory, suffered in the U.S. national soccer team’s international friendly Saturday culminated with Swanson exiting in the sixth inning of the Chicago Cubs’ electric 14-9 comeback win Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners. Before the inning, Swanson, positioned on the infield grass at the edge of the dirt, made one warmup throw to first baseman Trey Mancini, turned toward the Cubs dugout and signaled he needed to be replaced. The quick sequence was captured by Marquee Sports Network’s camera behind home plate. The Cubs later announced Swanson departed with tightness in his lower left side, though manager David Ross described it as cramping after the game and did not sound overly concerned about a possible injury.“Realistically I felt like my body was just kind of done,” Swanson said. “I felt like doing anything more probably would...
