UK demonstrators protest Israeli leader’s visit to London LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak welcomed Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu to London on Friday while demonstrators gathered nearby to protest against the Israeli government’s right-wing policies.Israel faces a national crisis over the government’s plans to overhaul the judicial system. They have ignited Israel’s biggest protests in history and sparked rare dissent from across Israeli society, including military reservists, navy veterans, high-tech businesspeople and former officials. As thousands of people took to the streets across the country on Thursday, Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption, defiantly pledged to proceed with the overhaul hours after his coalition passed a law making it harder to remove him from office. The overhaul plans would give Israel’s most right-wing coalition in history more control over judicial appointments, weaken the Supreme Court by limiting judicial review of legislation and allow Parliament to overturn court decisions with ...

Indigenous artists help skateboarding earn stamp of approval PHOENIX (AP) — Years ago, skateboarding was branded as a hobby for rebels or stoners in city streets, schoolyards and back alleys. Those days are long gone.Skateboarding, which has Native Hawaiian roots connected to surfing, no longer is on the fringes. It became an Olympic sport in 2020. There are numerous amateur and professional skateboarding competitions in the U.S. And on Friday, the U.S. Postal Service is issuing stamps that laud the sport — and what Indigenous groups have brought to the skating culture.Di’Orr Greenwood, 27, an artist born and raised on the Navajo Nation in Arizona whose work is featured on the new stamps, says it’s a long way from when she was a kid and people always kicked her out of certain spots just for skating. “Now it’s like being accepted on a global scale,” Greenwood said. “There’s so many skateboarders I know that are extremely proud of it.” The postal agency is debuting the “Art of the Skateboard” stam...

GOP sets vote on parents’ rights in clash over schools WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans will press forward Friday with a midterm campaign promise by voting on legislation to give parents greater say in what is taught in public schools, even as critics decry the “parents’ rights” bill as a burdensome proposal that would fuel a far-right movement that has resulted in book bans, rewrites of history curricula and raucous school board meetings across the country.Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has made the bill — labeled the Parents’ Bill of Rights Act — a top priority during the early weeks of his tenure atop the House. It will be an early test of unity for the chamber’s 222 Republicans, who have a thin majority.Even as House Republicans returned this week from a retreat where they insisted they are unified, lawmakers have proposed a score of potential changes to the bill, adding a degree of uncertainty to Friday’s vote.It showed how the adoption of an open amendment process in the House — a concession McC...

US launches airstrikes in Syria after drone kills US worker BEIRUT (AP) — A strike Thursday by a suspected Iranian-made drone killed a U.S. contractor and wounded five American troops and another contractor in northeast Syria, the Pentagon said. American forces said they retaliated soon after with “precision airstrikes” in Syria targeting facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, with activist groups saying they killed at least four people. The attack and the U.S. response threaten to upend recent efforts to deescalate tensions across the wider Middle East, whose rival powers have made steps toward détente in recent days after years of turmoil.U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement that the American intelligence community had determined the drone was of Iranian origin, but offered no other immediate evidence to support the claim.“The airstrikes were conducted in response to today’s attack as well as a series of recent attacks against coalition forces in Syria” by groups affiliated with...

98.3 TRY Social Dilemma: Do you shower with your back to the water? ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Becky. It's about showering, and it's a fun one for a Friday. Here's her email: Get the latest, news, weather, sports and community events delivered right to your inbox! Hi Jaime. My friends and I were talking about this after reading about it on social media and we thought it would make a great social dilemma. Do you shower with your back to the water or front to the water? I always assumed everyone showered with their back to the water, but boy was I wrong. I found out from several of my friends that they shower with their front to the water. That just seems wrong to me when I think about it. What about when you have to bend over to wash your legs…does your head hit the wall? But some friends say facing the water is the way to go. So we thought we would come to you? How do you stand when you're showering? Facing the water and the wall or with your back to the water and plenty of room to move around? I still say b...

Ask Amy: Customer trips over stylist tips

Ask Amy: Customer trips over stylist tips Dear Amy: I wear my hair short and have had the same stylist cut it regularly for the past 10 to 12 years. The stylist was always an employee at a pretty upscale salon, and as their prices continued to rise two to three times a year, I continued to go because I had built a rapport with the stylist.Knowing the salon owner took at least half of what I was paying her (because the stylist made no secret of saying so), I always tipped my stylist 20 percent to 25 percent. Now the stylist has left the expensive salon and gone out on her own in a small rented suite.I was taken aback when she kept the same high price for a haircut as the salon was charging.Am I still required to tip this person who is the business owner and has set the prices herself?I feel that leaving the price as high as it was at the salon would be enough to cover their costs and make a profit without me adding a tip.I feel awkward not tipping the same person because they don’t have a boss, but on the other hand I fe...

Vienna 'few degrees' exhibit tilts paintings to call for climate action A Vienna museum where climate activists recently attacked the glass screen shielding a Gustav Klimt painting has responded with an exhibit entitled 'A Few Degrees More' that tilts works to draw attention to the need for action on climate change.Activists from the group Last Generation smeared the screen in front of Klimt's "Death and Life" at the Leopold Museum in Vienna and glued one of their hands to it in the November protest calling for an end to drilling for oil."We found this way to be absolutely the wrong one," the museum's artistic director, Hans-Peter Wipplinger, said on the opening day of its response: a small exhibition with the full title "A Few Degrees More (Will Turn the World into an Uncomfortable Place)".It involves hanging 15 works by artists including Klimt and fellow Austrian great Egon Schiele at an angle, with texts calling attention to the effect that global warming of more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) from pre-industrial levels would have on the l...
