Hope Services clients weave creativity into something special If you visit Joseph George Fine Wines on Meridian Avenue in San Jose, you’ll see a spinner rack displaying cloth wine bags for sale. These gift bags aren’t imported from Italy or mass produced in China; they’re made about a mile away and have an inspiring story behind them.At HopeSTUDIO on Parkmoor Avenue, you’ll find a tight-knit group of textile artists — there are eight of them right now — weaving fabric using looms. Some of them will be chatting, others are concentrating on their job — quickly moving a shuttle back and forth while working pedals with their feet. Tesla: UAW seeks to unionize car maker, battle expected with CEO Elon Musk The United Auto Workers, freshly victorious against the Big Three U.S. auto companies, now has set its sights on Tesla. The powerful labor union announced a campaign this week to unionize the pioneering electric car maker, and a dozen other non-unionized car companies, to boost wages, benefits and workers’ rights. It emerged this fall from six-week strikes at Ford, General Motors and Stellantis with deals to dramatically boost pay for many workers. In its announcement this week, the UAW noted that Tesla CEO Elon Musk is the world’s richest man and the company’s “sales are booming, adding, “The question is, will Tesla workers get their fair share?”Musk is openly anti-union and hostile toward the UAW, and remains embroiled in a legal case over a 2018 tweet suggesting workers would be stripped of stock options if they unionized. Tesla, which has an assembly plant with 22,000 workers in Fremont, did not respond to requests for comment on the union push ...

Top California politicians are condemning video of Oakland council meeting on Gaza. Is it fair? OAKLAND — The approach behind Oakland’s resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza was intended to be “mild” and “moderate,” its author said — a simple plea for U.S. leaders to help secure lasting peace in a region trapped in a traumatic cycle of violence and death. But as Israel resumed airstrikes in Gaza after a temporary truce deal expired Friday, top Democrats in California were condemning the city. The lawmakers piled on after a video went viral that showed speakers at the City Council meeting on Monday — where the ceasefire resolution was unanimously adopted — offering strong opinions about Hamas, a U.S. designated-terrorist organization that targeted civilians in Israel during an Oct. 7 attack. Most cities in the U.S. have resisted signaling support for Palestinians in Gaza or taking any other position on the Gaza situation. While ceasefire resolutions have been approved in Detroit, Atlanta and Seattle, plus Akron, Ohio, and ...
