ALDS now a best-of-three series with Twins returning home to Sonny Gray on the mound

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 00:37:09 GMT

It’s a best-of-three now. The Twins have home-field advantage in two of those three games and they have their pitching rotation set so one ace, Sonny Gray, will pitch Game 3 and the other, Pablo López, is on track to start Game 5 back in Houston, if it’s necessary. All that has to be comforting to the Twins, who returned back to Minnesota in the early hours of Monday morning after squaring the American League Division Series against the defending World Series champion Astros with a win in Game 2 in Houston. Game 3 of the series will begin at 3:07 p.m. on Tuesday at Target Field with Gray squaring off against Astros starter Christian Javier.“We’ve got Sonny lined up, who arguably is top three (in the) Cy Young race this year. And then if we need a Game 5, we’ve got Pablo lined up on normal rest, so I think we like our chances,” Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers said. “We like our chances against anybody. It just so happens that we’re in a pretty good spot right now.”G...

Dane Mizutani: If Twins go on a deep playoff run, their fan base deserves a lot of credit

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 00:37:09 GMT

The home crowd at Target Field literally changed the game last week when the Twins hosted the Toronto Blue Jays in the two-game American League Wild Card Series. With a couple of runners in scoring position midway through Game 2 last Wednesday, Twins pitching ace Sonny Gray got out of the jam thanks to a perfectly executed pickoff move that caught Blue Jays baserunner Vladimir Guerrero Jr. napping on second base.Asked about the sequence postgame, Gray gave a shoutout to the 38,518 fans in attendance, explaining that it was so loud in that moment that Guerrero couldn’t hear anything while he was taking his lead off the base. As a result, Gray turned and fired to Twins shortstop Carlos Correa, who promptly tagged Guerrero to end the scoring threat.“The crowd was incredible today from the moment I stepped on the mound,” Gray said. “They really, really helped us win that game.”As the Twins prepare to host the Houston Astros in Game 3 and Game 4 of the Americ...

Who is Nuggets’ backup 5 behind Nikola Jokic? With Zeke Nnaji and DeAndre Jordan, it might depend on the opponent

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 00:37:09 GMT

In order for Zeke Nnaji to be the next big man up behind Nikola Jokic, his current checklist features only two boxes: crash the glass, and don’t break like glass. One requires increased physicality and aggression. The other is a matter of injury prevention. After appearing in a career-high 53 games and five more during the playoffs last season, Nnaji is positioned to become even more of an everyday player in 2023-24 as the defending champion Nuggets seek frontcourt depth to support their two-time MVP after a short offseason.Like last year, they don’t exactly have a surplus of it. Hence Nnaji’s continued inclusion in the effort to solidify a backup center, despite his 6-foot-9 height and skillset that makes him more natural at other positions.“If he’s our backup five, that means we’re playing pretty small,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. “So that gives us a chance to be pretty versatile. Switch a lot more with Zeke.”It’s he and vetera...

Broncos coach Sean Payton downplays sideline interaction with Russell Wilson: “I don’t think I was that animated”

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 00:37:09 GMT

Broncos coach Sean Payton on Monday downplayed a sideline interaction with Russell Wilson after a game-sealing fumble from the quarterback against the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon.Trailing 24-21 but only roughly 20 yards from field goal range in the final minute of the game, Wilson tried to escape the pocket to his left as Quincy Williams bore down on him as a free blitzer.Instead of Wilson escaping, though, Williams knocked the ball out of his hand and Bryce Hall scooped it up and returned it for a touchdown. As Wilson came off the field, Payton removed his headset and gestured with his hands toward the veteran quarterback.“I don’t think I was that animated,” Payton said Monday. “Every attention to exchange or discussions I have with Russ (gets talked about).I just wanted to make sure he knew the linebacker was a free rusher, so it wasn’t as big of an exchange or big deal I think maybe as some may have thought.”Payton earlier said the Broncos had a five-man protection and so Wi...

Upon Further Review: Broncos’ defense might be beyond fixing

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 00:37:09 GMT

Denver’s defense added to its long list of in-game blunders in the third quarter against the New York Jets on Sunday. With the Broncos up 13-8 with 13:39 remaining, Jets quarterback Zach Wilson handed the ball to running back Breece Hall, who tore his ACL a year ago against the Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High.Hall was running with no restrictions Sunday, and it sure looked like it when he took advantage of a wide-open gap and exploded down the field for a 72-yard touchdown to take a 15-13 advantage.Broncos defensive tackle Mike Purcell, who was in for an injured D.J. Jones, was pushed back by an offensive lineman while Kareem Jackson took a poor angle as Hall, who had 177 rushing yards on 22 carries, breezed by him for the go-ahead score.“It was one of those wide zones. He cut back (and) I’m a middle guy, so I have to (get him) down in that situation,” Jackson said. “But we gave up. It has to be a collective effort.”In the Broncos’ 31-21 loss, the defense allowed 407 offensive ...

Delta Airlines cancels flights to Tel Aviv amid Israel's war with Hamas

Delta Airlines is canceling flights to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport through the end of the month after the surprise attack on Israel by Hamas militants over the weekend that has killed nearly 1,600 people on both sides, including Americans, and prompted a declaration of war by the Israeli government.  Israel has since increased airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and sealed it off from food, fuel, and other supplies in retaliation for the bloody incursion. Hamas also escalated on Monday, pledging to kill captured Israelis if attacks targeted civilians without warnings. Officials at Delta released the following statement to KTLA: “As Delta continues monitoring events in the region, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our [Tel Aviv] flights through Oct. 31, 2023. Our hearts are with those who are impacted as our people work to find safe alternatives for customers trying to depart [Tel Aviv]. Notifications to customers about their specific flight will be communicated...
