PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon weekly newspaper has had to lay off its entire staff and halt print after 40 years because its funds were embezzled by a former employee, its editor said, in a devastating blow to a publication that serves as an important source of information in a community that, like many others nationwide, is struggling with growing gaps in local news coverage.About a week before Christmas, the Eugene Weekly found inaccuracies in its bookkeeping, editor Camilla Mortensen said. It discovered that a former employee who was “heavily involved” with the paper’s finances had used its bank account to pay themselves $90,000 since at least 2022, she said. The paper also became aware of at least $100,000 in unpaid bills — including to the paper’s printer — stretching back several months, she said.Additionally, multiple employees, including Mortensen, realized that money from their paychecks that was supposed to be going into retirement accounts was never deposite...Light snow possible New Year's Eve

Clouds blocked all sun a second consecutive day as rains eased Friday. December—typically Chicago's cloudiest month of the year—has been even cloudier than usual this year. The month, which typically hosts about 40% of its possible sun has generated just 32% of its possible sun to date in 2023. That's only 80% of December's typically paltry allotment of sunshine.Total storm rainfall out of this slow moving system has come to 0.27" at O'Hare and 0.37" at Midway. Some clearing is expected later tonight allowing some sunshine as the New Year's Eve weekend gets underway Saturday. But any sun will yield ground to a new round of incoming clouds later Saturday. Those clouds are to accompany the next weather disturbance to sink southeastward into the Midwest out of Canada and potential bring some flurries to the Chicago area later Saturday night that is to build into periods of light snow Sunday into Sunday night (New Year's Eve). Though NOT a BIG SYSTEM, modest accumulations are poss...Body of missing St. Louis mother found in Chicago suburbs; ex-boyfriend charged with murder

AUSTIN (KXAN) — When the new year starts, Senator Judith Zaffirini will start her role as Dean of the Texas Senate. Zaffirini will be the first woman to serve as Dean. She previously broke barriers when she was the first Mexican American woman elected to the Senate in 1986.According to Zaffirini's office, she will take over the role of Dean once former Senator John Whitmire resigns at the end of the year to become Mayor of Houston on January 1.The role of the Dean is determined by seniority. A daily wall chart shows 300 to 381 meals served at breakfast, lunch and dinner, or anywhere from 864 to 1,065 meals per day, every day. Now, “they’re more...New NYS minimum wage goes into effect Monday

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The new year means new laws go into effect across the state. On Monday the New York state minimum wage will rise to $15 an hour. However, many local businesses have already been paying employees more than what is required. It's something David Girard has taken notice of at 518 Craft. Get the latest news, weather, sports and more delivered right to your inbox! “What I found was that there was a kind of generosity in the pay scale here and the idea that there was this awareness that not only do you pay people a living wage, but you pay them what they’re worth,” said Girard. He started as a bartender and has worked his way up to management. He said when you invest in your workforce everyone gets along better. “But at the same time I think we are all big believers in the more we invest in the people who work with us and for us that might hurt a little bit in the short-term, but it’s always going to pay dividends in the long-term,” said Girard. Most payro...$20K plan could help workers, patients after St. Louis nursing home closure
