US announces $3.5B for projects nationwide to strengthen electric grid, bolster resilience

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration on Wednesday announced $3.5 billion for 58 projects across the country to strengthen electric grid resilience as extreme weather events such as the deadly Maui and California wildfires continue to strain the nation’s aging transmission systems. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said it was the largest federal investment ever in grid infrastructure, supporting projects that will harden electric systems and improve energy reliability and affordability. The federal spending, combined with money promised by private partners, could result in up to $8 billion in investments nationally to upgrade the grid, Granholm said.“The grid, as it currently sits, is not equipped to handle all the new demand” and withstand natural disasters and extreme weather worsened by climate change, Granholm said at a news conference. “We need it to be bigger, we need it to be stronger, we need it to be smarter” to bring a range of renewable energy projects online and m...

Director of Queen’s Hillel, Yos Tarshish, spoke to the crowd on Tuesday afternoon and denounced Hamas’ initial October 7 attack, unequivocally calling it terrorism. Tarshish decried the idea that the attack was Palestinian resistance, saying there’s never an excuse for the loss of innocent lives.“Terrorism is always wrong, always,” Tarshish said. “It is never okay to hurt the innocent, it is never okay to kill civilians… this is not resistance, we can never allow this to be considered resistance!”The rally was organized by...

Gaza ground war could be ‘Mogadishu on steroids,’ says former US General Petraeus

BERLIN — A military ground offensive by the Israel Defense Forces in the Gaza Strip would last years and involve horrific fighting, David Petraeus, who served as a top U.S. general in both Iraq and Afghanistan, told POLITICO’s Power Play podcast.Speaking after the brutal attacks by Hamas militants on Israel which left 1,400 dead and thousands injured, the former director of the Central Intelligence Agency warned that pursuing the IDF’s bombing campaign with a land invasion “could be Mogadishu on steroids very quickly.”Citing the 1993 incident in which three American Black Hawk helicopters were shot down in the Somali capital, prompting bloody urban fighting as American forces struggled to rescue crash survivors, Petraeus said the IDF faced a similar reality inside hostile territory if it engaged on the ground. “If they’re [Hamas] as creative in the defense as they were in that horrific, barbaric, unspeakable attack, then you’ll see suicide b...

To ban or not to ban: Fixing the EU’s global plastic waste mess

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 00:45:15 GMT

The EU has vowed to clean up its act and cut back on dumping its waste elsewhere. For communities in low-income countries bearing the brunt of Europe’s trash, that can’t come fast enough.A joint investigation by POLITICO, Lighthouse Reports and other global media partners highlights what an uphill climb that effort will be, as legal loopholes and a lack of transparency facilitate the flow of illegal exports to countries like Myanmar, where local communities are confronted with the pollution caused by ever-growing mounds of trash. The investigation — backed by on-the-ground reporting and interviews with policymakers and waste experts — comes as EU lawmakers and countries consider an all-out ban on plastic waste exports as part of a broader revamp of the bloc’s waste rules. As part of the revision, the European Commission has suggested tightening the conditions under which recyclable plastic waste can be exported to non-OECD countries, suggesting they must express...
