Review: Amazing ’90s hitmakers deliver incredibly moving night of music

Review: Amazing ’90s hitmakers deliver incredibly moving night of music You just can’t replace Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes.Nobody knows that better than TLC, the ’90s R&B-pop hitmakers who have been without the amazing rapper — who provided the “L” in the band’s name — since her death at the age of 30 in 2002.So, TLC didn’t even try during Sunday night’s well-attended concert at Concord Pavilion, making the wise decision to incorporate recordings of Lopes’ vocals into their performance rather than to try and have someone else handle the verses onstage. The result was a moving one-hour-plus set of music that not only championed the group’s current duo incarnation — with Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, the “T” and “C” in TLC, respectively — but also underscored the mighty legacy of Left Eye.TLC’s performance was, by far, the highlight of the last stop on the successful Hot Summer Nights tour, whic...

New York Times dumps sports department for Athletic content By Michelle Chapman | Associated PressThe New York Times is disbanding its sports department and will rely on coverage from The Athletic, a website it acquired last year for $550 million. The decision impacts more than 35 people in the sports department, according to The New York Times. Journalists on the sports desk will move to other roles within the newsroom and no layoffs are planned.“Though we know this decision will be disappointing to some, we believe it is the right one for readers and will allow us to maximize the respective strengths of The Times’s and The Athletic’s newsrooms,” New York Times Co. Chairman A.G. Sulzberger and CEO Meredith Kopit Levien wrote Monday in a letter to staff. They say sports coverage will be expanded under the shift.“Under our plan, the digital homepage, newsletters, social feeds, the sports landing page and the print section will draw from even more of the approximately 150 stories The Athletic produces each day chron...

CSU system to consider 6% annual tuition hikes to cover a $1.5 billion budget gap

CSU system to consider 6% annual tuition hikes to cover a $1.5 billion budget gap More than 460,000 students at the 23 California State University campuses could see annual tuition increases in coming years — for the first time in nearly a decade. The CSU Board of Trustee’s Committee on Finance will weigh a proposal on Tuesday, July 11, that would implement 6% tuition hikes every year starting in the fall 2024 and ending in the spring 2029 semesters. The potential move, university officials say, is necessary to cover $1.5 billion of unfunded operational costs in the system’s budget, though students and others say it could financially harm students — and further hurt enrollment. The proposal will require full board approval, which would likely happen sometime in September.A CSU workgroup first identified the massive funding gap in a nearly 70-page report released in May. It found that the system only has enough money to pay for about 85% of the actual costs of education, institutional and academic support, and student services at all of its campuses. That’s largely b...
