3 shot, 1 fatally, in off-campus shooting near Northwestern University: police EVANSTON, Ill. — Three people were shot, one fatally, Wednesday evening in an off-campus shooting near Northwestern University, according to police.The medical examiner's office identified the victim as 18-year-old Jacquis Irby.According to a tweet, the university said police are investigating shots fired at Clark Street Beach. Jan Tchoryk CHICAGO — The first of two funerals for Chicago firefighter who died in the line-of-duty last week will happen Thursday.Lieutenant Jan Tchoryk will be laid to rest following services at St. Johns Ukrainian Church on the city's Far Northwest Side. Hundreds are expected to attend the funeral services.Last Wednesday, the 26-year veteran of the department collapsed while responding to a fire in the 1200 block of North Lake Shore Drive at a Gold Coast high-rise. The fire was on the 27th-floor and the elevators were out. Firefighters had to use the stairs to get to the fire.A short time later, a mayday response was called for a firefighter down. Man found guilty of spitting at police gets 70 years in prison LUBBOCK, Texas (KLBK/KAMC) -- A Texas man was sentenced to 70 years in prison Wednesday after he was found guilty of harassing a public servant for spitting at Lubbock police officers. Larry Pearson, 36, was arrested in May 2022 for domestic violence after a victim flagged down an officer in northeast Lubbock, prosecutor Jessica Gorman said. The victim told police that Pearson had hit her several times and that he had a gun. Gorman said that firearm turned out to be an airsoft gun. A police report at the time stated the victim had "multiple visible injuries" on her face. Gorman said after Pearson was taken into custody, he was upset the victim was not arrested instead. According to the Austin Police Department, officers and Austin-Travis County EMS medics responded to the crash around 2:15 a.m. between two vehicles and a pedestrian on the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 Service Road between 6th and 7th Streets. Police said the driver of a Kia Forte hit the pedestrian, Jorge Luis Sanchez Villalobos, as he crossed the street. Texas residents concerned after 900-foot-wide sinkhole begins to spread HOUSTON (KIAH) - Residents in Daisetta, Texas say they're concerned that a massive sinkhole will swallow their homes. The sinkhole, which formed back in 2008, is growing again. For years, the ground has remained stable. That changed on Sunday, April 2nd. Community members say it has swallowed up oil tanks, telephone poles and several cars. The sinkhole is located a little north of Hull-Daisetta High School and west of FM 770 on the edge of the DeLoach Oil and Gas Waste Well. Daisetta is located northeast of Houston. So far, authorities have not issued any evacuations.

Police say the driver left the scene of the crash.
